Apple took in 74 percent of app download revenue

Market research firm Canalys today issued a new report on mobile app downloads at four major online stores-- Google, Apple's App Store, Microsoft Windows Phone Store and RIM's BlackBerry World.

And the numbers may surprise you, depending and what it was you were expecting. Revenues reached $2.2 billion from app sales and in-app purchases (before revenue sharing), up 9 percent from Q4 2012.
Even in the relatively mature North American market, app downloads and revenues were up 8 percent and 6 percent, respectively.
Among other findings, app downloads at the four stores totaled 13.4 billion in Q1, up 11 percent between the December and March quarters.
Emerging markets such as South Africa, Brazil and Indonesia showed the strongest growth in terms of app downloads, but not necesarrily revenue.
App downloads in Western Europe were up 8 percent, while revenues grew by 10.1 percent.
Surprisinly, Apple's App store accounted for the largest share of revenue among the four stores, at around 74 percent.
Overall, Google saw the greatest number of downloads -- about 51% -- with Apple close behind.
Canalys' Tim Shepherd says "Apple's App Store and Google Play remain the heavyweights in the mobile app store world. In comparison, BlackBerry World and the Windows Phone Store remain distant challengers today, though they still should not be ignored, at least for now." (collected)
